Adenauer, Konrad
Adenauer, Konrad (1876-1967). German statesman. He served as Oberburgermeister (Lord Mayor) of Cologne from 1917 until dismissed by the Nazis in 1933. Under the Nazis he was arrested several times by the Gestapo. Having entered national German politics in 1946 as chairman of the Christian Democratic Union in the British zone, he subsequently became chancellor of the new Federal German Republic (1949-55). Under his leadership the Republic achieved a remarkable political and economic recovery.
