Albrecht Durer
Albrecht Darer (1471-1528), German painter and engraver. Durer was the son of a goldsmith, from whom he probably learned the art of precise detailed drawing. At the age of 13 he produced the first known self-portrait, drawn from his reflection in a mirror. After a lengthy training and much travel in the Nether-lands, Germany, and Italy, he opened a workshop in Nuremberg in 1495. His many paintings include The Adoration of the Magi (1504) and The Martyrdom of St Bartholomew. His interest in technical problems together with his sensitive realism made ‘him the leading German painter of his Clay. After 1515 Durer worked for the emperor Maximilian and in 1520 he became court painter to Charles V.
