Alfred Bernhard Nobel
Alfred Bernhard Nobel, (1833-96). Swedish chemist and engineer. His research into the sale use of nitroglycerine led him to the development of dynamite, which contains nitroglycerine in a stable dry form that can be exploded by a detonator. Nobel left the bulk of his fortune to establish annual international awards, the Nobel Prizes, which are awarded for outstanding achievements in chemistry, physics, medicine, literature, peace, and economics.
