Anthony Trollope
Anthony Trollope, (1815-82). British novelist. Trollope worked for the Post Office in England, Ireland, and abroad until 1867, and is credited with the invention of the pillar box. His first successful novels form a series dealing with middle-class life in the fictional county of Barsetshire; they include Barchester Towers (1857) and The Last Chronicle of Barset (1867). Can You Forgive Her? (1865) introduced the saga of the aristocratic Palliser family, which eventually ran to six volumes. His Autobiography (1883) described his disciplined approach to writing; he would be at his table by 530 a.m. every day and produce 250 words every quarter of an hour until breakfast. He would then attend to his duties at the GPO.
