Bach Johann Sebastian
Bach Johann Sebastian (1685-1750). German composer. He came from a musical family, and at 19 went to the court at Weimar as an organist and chamber musician. After this he became musical director to Prince Leopold at Cothen, where he wrote the Brandenburg Concertos, and later held the same position in Leipzig, where he stayed until his death. His Christmas Oratorio, Mass in B Minor, St Matthew Passion, and St John Passion are among the most famous religious works in the history of music. He also wrote much keyboard music and many cantatas. Three of his 13 children, Wilhelm Friedemann, Karl Philip Emanuel, and Johann Christian, were also accomplished composers.
