Baron George Rodney
Baron George Rodney, (1718-92). British admiral. Born in London, he entered the navy in 1732. In 1756 and 1760 he destroyed much of the French fleet in-tended for the invasion of England in the Seven Years’ War. While serving in the Leeward Islands, he captured Martinique, St Lucia, and Grenada from the French (1762), and during the American War of Independence he defeated a Spanish fleet off Cape St Vin-cent (1780). His greatest achievement, on his return to the West Indies, was his victory over the French near Dominica (1782).
