Baron Manfred von Richthofen
Baron Manfred von Richthofen, (1892-1918). German fighter pilot. Germany’s most famous pilot in World War I, he was known as the Red Baron because of the colour of his Fokker E2 triplane, which he painted scarlet in defiance of an order to camouflage it. Richthofen shot down 80 enemy aircraft before being killed in action himself. His neice Frieda married the writer D. H. Lawrence.
