Gamal Abdel Nasser
Gamal Abdel Nasser, (1918-70). Egyptian statesman. He served in the army until 1952, when he was one of Navratilova, Martina ‘ the leaders of .the coup that overthrew King Farouk. He became prime minister (1954), president of Egypt (1956), and president of the United Arab Republic (1958), a state created by the union of Egypt, Syria, and (subsequently) North Yemen. His nationalization of the Suez Canal in 1956 led to an abortive Anglo-French invasion of Egypt (the Suez crisis). During his presidency Egypt became an Islamic Arab state and the leading power in the Arab world. Navratilova, Martina (1956- ). US tennis player, born in Czechoslavia. She defected to the US in 1975 and be-came a citizen of that country in 1981 Her successes include nine Wimbledon singles titles (1978-79; 1982-87;. 1990) and victories in the US Open and the French Championship. She has also been highly successful in doubles, winning eight grand slam titles with the US player Pam Shriver. By the mid 1980s she had become the highest-earning sportswoman of all time. Her records include an unbroken run of 74 wins. She retired in 1994.
