Golda Meir
Golda Meir, (1898-1978). Israeli politician. Born in Kiev, she travelled with her family to the US in 1906. She became an active Zionist and emigrated with her husband to Palestine (1921), where they joined a kibbutz. She was active in the struggle for independence and a founder of the state of Israel in 1948. Subsequently she served as minister of labour (1949-56) and foreign minister (1956-66). As prime minister (1969-74) she saw Israel through the Arab-Israeli War (1973).
