Greta Garbo
Greta Garbo, original name Greta Gustafson (1905-90). Swedish film actress. Having begun her film career in Sweden and Germany, she went to Hollywood in the 1920’s, where she soon gained a reputation as the most beautiful actress of the silent screen. Her later talking films included Queen Christina (1933), Anna Karenina (1935), Camille (1936), and Ninotchka (1939). After retiring from acting in the 1940’s she avoided all publicity, living in seclusion in New York until her death.
