Gustav Hoist
Gustav Hoist, (1874-1934). British composer of Swedish descent. Educated at the Royal College of Music, he later taught there and at St Paul’s Girls’ School and Morley College, London. His knowledge of Sanskrit inspired the chamber opera Savitri (1908) and a series of choral hymns. A friend of Vaughan Williams, he was interested in English folk songs and the Tudor com-posers and wrote much choral music, including The Hymn of Jesus and The Ode to Death. Hoist’s best-known compositions are the orchestral suite The Planets (1916) and Egdon Heath (1927), another orchestral work.
