Hans Holbein the Younger
Hans Holbein the Younger (c. 1497-1543). German painter and designer. After studying in the studio of his father, Hans Holbein the Elder, he moved to Basel, Switzerland (1515), and began painting portraits, such as Erasmus (1517). Holbein then settled in England, where he worked for Sir Thomas More (1526-28) before becoming court painter to Henry VIII. His later poi._ traits include The Ambassadors (1533) and Anne of Cleves (1539/40). Holbein died of the plague in London. Hob bein’s great skill in portrait painting lay in his tech. pique of drawing the eye away from the garments and surroundings of his subjects and focusing attention on their facial characteristics.
