Harold Pinter
Harold Pinter, (1930- ). British dramatist. The son of a Jewish tailor in the East End of London, he published poems and acted in repertory before turning to drama. His first full-length play The Birthday Party (1957) ran for only a week. It was The Caretaker (1960) that made his name and established his reputation for enigmatic drama with a strong suggestion of menace. His plays of the 1960s and 1970s included The Home-coming (1965) and No Man’s Land (1975). During the 1980s he wrote mainly for the cinema and campaigned on political issues. Moonlight (1993) was his first major play for 15 years. Pinter has also written radio and television plays; his screenplays include The Servant (1962) and The French Lieutenant’s Woman (1981).
