Hypatia
Hypatia (c. 370-415 AD). Neoplatonist philosopher and mathematician. The daughter of the philosopher Them, she lectured in Alexandria where she gained a reputation for learning, wisdom, and eloquence amongst both pagans and Christians. However, following the appointment of Cyril to the patriarchate of Alexandria in 410, tensions between these communities grew. Resenting her influence on the city prefect, Orestes, church leaders denounced Hypatia and she was seized by a Christian mob and lynched.
