Immanuel Kant
Immanuel Kant, (1724-1804). German philosopher. As a young man poverty prevented him from following an academic career; he worked as a private tutor for nine years before taking his degree in 1755. For the next 15 years he lectured on physics, gradually widening his field to take in logic, ethics, and metaphysics. He criticized the philosophy of Leibniz, which prevailed in German universities at that time. In 1770 he became professor of logic and metaphysics at Konigsberg. International fame followed with a series of major works, including Critique of Pure Reason (1781; revised 1787).
