Jackson Pollock

Jackson Pollock, (1912-56). US painter, the best-known exponent of abstract expressionism. Pollock was born in Wyoming and studied at the Art Students’ League in New York. His early paintings, which date from the 1930s, are executed in the realistic style of the US regionalist painters. He held his first exhibition (jointly with William de Kooning) in 1940. After moving through various styles, Pollock adopted his famous technique of ‘action painting’ in the late 1940s. This involved fixing a large sheet of unstretched canvas to the wall or floor and then dripping, throwing, or spattering paint across it in rhythmic and often violent to ex-movements. The resulting work was supposed press the unconscious feelings of the artist while he Poi pot was creating it. In his later works Pollock often used such implements as sticks or trowels rather than brushes. His works include One and Echo and Blue Poles. He was killed in a car accident.
