James Hargreaves
James Hargreaves, (d. 1778). British spinner and inventor. In 1764 he invented a hand-powered machine that .could operate eight spindles mechanically. This he named the spinning ‘jenny’ after his daughter. The invention aroused hostility among other spinners, a group of whom destroyed many of the machines. Hargreaves moved to Nottingham in 1768 where he set up a small but successful spinning mill.
