John Bunyan
John Bunyan (1628-88), English religious writer. The son of a Bedfordshire tinker, he joined the Baptist Church in 1653 and later became a preacher. Puritan preaching was banned at the Restoration, and Bunyan was imprisoned for several years. The religious allegory Pilgrim’s Progress (1678), his best-known work, was written during his imprisonment. After his release he continued preaching in Bedfordshire, often in disguise, and was sometimes forced into hiding.
