John Gielgud
John Gielgud (1904), British actor and theatre director. He made his stage debut at the Old Vic at the age of 17. Several years later he became famous for his Shakespearean performances at the same theatre; his Hamlet broke box-office records in both London and New York. In 1958 he appeared alone in the international success Ages of Man, in which he recited passages from Shakespeare. He has also appeared in numerous comic parts, in several modern plays, and in films, notably as the valet Hobson in the comedy Arthur (1981) and as the title character in Prospero’s Books (1991).
