John McEnroe
John McEnroe, (Patrick) (1959- ). US tennis player, The 18-year-old McEnroe came to prominence when he reached the semi-finals on his first Wimbledon appearance (1977). He went on to take the Wimbledon singles title in 1981, 1983, and 1984, and the US Open in 1979, 1980, 1981, and 1984. He also won numerous doubles titles, usually with the US player Peter Fleming. Despite these successes, McEnroe was notorious for his temperamental behaviour on court, which resulted in a number of fines. In 1986 he married the US film actress Tatum O’Neal.
