John Stuart Mill
John Stuart Mill, (1806-73). Scottish philosopher and economist. The son of the economist James Mill, he is said to have been a child prodigy, reading Greek at the age of three. He established the Utilitarian Society in 1823 but moved away from strict utilitarianism to a more human philosophy after a nervous breakdown in 1827. His major writings include Principles of Political Economy (1848), On Liberty (1859), and On the Subjection of Women (1869). He became an MP in 1865, and lent valuable support to women’s suffrage.
