Joseph Mallord William Turner
Joseph Mallord William Turner, (1775-1851). British landscape painter. Turner had his first exhibition at the age of 16 and became a member of the Royal Academy when he was only 27. Throughout his life he made numerous sketching tours in England and Europe. In his later years he evolved a highly original style of painting featuring luminous atmospheric and scenic effects, which anticipated impressionism and even abstract art. He produced about 300 paintings, including The Fighting Temeraire (1839), and over 20,000 drawings and water colour sketches.
