Joseph McCarthy
Joseph McCarthy, (1908-57). US Republican politician. He caused a nationwide sensation in 1950 with his al-legations that there were 205 communists working in the State Department. His witch-hunt against communism was termed `McCarthyism’, and caused a large number of people, most of whom were innocent, to lose their jobs and their reputations. In 1954 he was censured by his colleagues in the Senate and was un-able to regain power.
