Katsushika Hokusai
Katsushika Hokusai, (1760-1849). Japanese painter and engraver. He was taught by Shunsho, a print designer, and is famous for his coloured woodcuts, used extensively in book illustrations. His simplified design is best shown in landscapes such as The Amusements of the Eastern Capital (1799) and The 36 Views of Mount Fuji (1823-29). His work influenced late 19th-century European painters.
