Ludwig Mies Van Der Rohe
Ludwig Mies Van Der Rohe, (1886-1969). US architect, born in Germany. With his friends Gropius and Le Corbusier, he is considered one of the founding fathers of modern architecture. In 1930 Mies became director of the influential German school of architecture, and applied arts, the Bauhaus. An anti-Nazi, he emigrated to the US in 1937. He became famous for his functional designs using steel and glass. Among the many buildings he designed are the Seagram Building, New York, and the National Gallery, Berlin.
