Paul Reuter
Reuter, Paul Julius, Baron von (1816-99). German founder of the first telegraphic news organization, born Israel Beer Josaphat. During the revolutions of 1848 he sent news articles from Paris to the German papers; and the following year he set up a pigeon post service in Aachen. In 1851 he established his headquarters in London and his telegraphic news service spread throughout the world. He was created a baron in 1871 and his son Herbert took over the news service in 1879. Reuters now transmits over 1.5 million words a day from correspondents in 183 countries.
