Pierre Trudeau
Pierre Trudeau, (Elliot) (1919- ). Canadian statesman. A colourful figure with a flair for publicity, he became leader of the Liberal Party and prime minister in 1968. He took a firm stand against Quebec nationalism, one of the major problems of his term of office. His government was defeated in 1979 and he resigned as party leader later that year. He was separated from his young wife Margaret in 1977 when she moved to New York, where her new lifestyle and involvement with the Rolling Stones attracted considerable attention from the press.
