Prince Charles
Prince Charles (1948), Prince of Wales, heir apparent to the throne of the United Kingdom. The eldest son of Elizabeth II, he was educated at Gordonstoun School and Cambridge University. He was invested as Prince of Wales in 1969 and spent five years in the Royal Navy (1971-76) before taking up full-time royal duties. In 1981 he married Lady Diana Spencer (1961- ), daughter of the eighth Earl Spencer. As Princess of Wales, Diana became a hugely popular figure and one of the most photographed women of all time. They have two children, Prince William (1982- ) and Prince Henry (1984- ). The couple separated in 1992, amidst rumours and accusations that did much to harm the image of the monarchy. Prince Charles is known for his controversial views on modern architecture and his concern for environmental issues.
