Prince Clemens Metternich
Prince Clemens Metternich, (1773-1859). Austrian statesman. Through his marriage to the granddaughter of the state chancellor Kaunitz (1795), Metternich was assured a high position at court. He served as minister of foreign affairs (1809-48) and negotiated the marriage of Napoleon to Marie Louise of Austria (1810). He was one of the leading figures at the Congress of Vienna (1814-15). During the revolution of 1848 he was forced to flee to Britain.
