Samuel Butler
Samuel Butler (1835-1902), British novelist. He shocked his family by refusing to follow his father into the Church and in 1860 immigrated to New Zealand. Money earned from sheep-farming enabled him to return to Britain in 1864, and he achieved some success as a painter before turning to literature with the satire Erewhon (1872). His autobiographical novel The Way of All Flesh (1903), which condemned his claustrophobic Victorian upbringing, was published after his death.
