Samuel Morse
Samuel Morse, (1791-1872). US inventor of the Morse Code. A keen artist, he studied painting in Britain from 1811 to 1815. He also became interested in electricity. He had the idea of a telegraph in 1832 and by 1838 he had built a prototype and devised the Morse Code for use on it. In 1843, with government sponsorship, he set up the first commercial line, between Washington and Baltimore. In the Morse Code each letter of the alphabet is represented by a series of dots and dashes, a dash being three times the length of a dot. Mosley, Sir Oswald (1896-1980). British politician. He served in Parliament successively as a Conservative (1918-22), an Independent (1922-24), and a Labour member (1924-30). After unsuccessfully trying to form a socialist party in 1931, he founded the British Union of Fascists (1932). At the outbreak of World War II he was interned but was released in 1943 on health grounds. Following the war he resumed his fascist activities and founded the Union Movement.
