Sir Arthur Whitten Brown
Sir Arthur Whitten Brown (1886-1948), Scottish aviator. During World War I he served in the Royal Flying Corps. In June 1919 he and Captain John Alcock made the first ever crossing of the Atlantic Ocean by aero-plane. Flying from Newfoundland to County Galway in Ireland in a Vickers-Vimy biplane, they made the crossing in just over 16 hours. They received a £10,000 prize from the Daily Mail and were both knighted. Later that year Alcock was killed in a flying accident near Rouen.
