Sir Michael Tippett
Sir Michael Tippett, (1905- ). British composer. Tippett was imprisoned for three months during World War II for his pacifist convictions. A graduate of the Royal College of Music, he was musical director of Morley College, London, from 1940 to 1951. His many early works remain unpublished, his first mature com-positions being the concerto for double string orchestra (1939) and the oratorio A Child of Our Time (1941). His later works include the operas and Midsummer Marriage (1953), The Ice Break (1976), and New Year (1989), as well as four symphonies, concertos, piano sonatas, and string quartets.
