Stanley Kubrick
Stanley Kubrick, (1928- ). US film director and scriptwriter. He worked as a magazine photographer and made documentary films before writing and directing Paths of Glory (1958), a distinguished film about World War I. His other films include Lolita (1962), Dr Strangelove (1964), the science-fiction epic 2001: A Space Odyssey (1968), The Shining (1980), and Full-Metal Jacket (1987). A Clockwork Orange (1971) aroused some controversy, as it was feared that impressionable people might be led to imitate the scenes of horrific violence in the film. On the director’s wishes, the film was withdrawn in Britain.
