Stephane Grappelli
Stephane Grappelli (1908), French jazz violinist. Originally a classical musician, he changed direction after meeting Django Reinhardt in 1931; the two men founded the quintet of the Hot Club of France (1934) and recorded ‘Lime House Blues’ (1935). During World War H he lived in Britain, playing in night clubs; he returned to Paris in 1946. From the late 1950s he toured, mainly in Europe. His recordings include ‘Viper’s Dream’ (1937) and ‘Just One of Those Things’ (1973), recorded at the Montreux Jazz Festival.
