Ted Hughes
Ted Hughes, (1930— ). British poet and writer. Hughes was born in Yorkshire and educated at Ox-ford University. There he met the poet Sylvia Plath, whom he married in 1956; she committed suicide seven years later. Hughes made his reputation with the powerful, sometimes savage, poems about the natural world in The Hawk in the Rain (1957) and other early volumes. Later collections include Crow (1970), Moortown (1979), and Flowers and Insects (1987). His writings for children have also proved popular. In 1984 he was appointed poet laureate, a position he has used to campaign on environmental issues. His Collected Poems appeared in 1995.
