The Venerable Bede
The Venerable Bede (673-735 AD), Monk, biblical scholar, and the first English historian. Bede devoted his life to teaching, writing, and study at the monastery of Jarrow, where he wrote the Ecclesiastical History of the English People. He died while working on an English translation of the Gospel of St John. Within 50 years he was revered as a’ saint. In the 11th century his bones were taken to Durham Cathedral, where they still remain.
