William Congreve

William Congreve (1670-1729). English dramatist of the Restoration era, brought up in Ireland. He wrote several highly successful comedies, including the satirical Love for Love (1695). After the failure of The Way of the World (1700), now considered his best work, he gave up the theatre. He died in a carriage accident and is buried in Westminster Abbey (see box).
