Woodrow Wilson
Woodrow Wilson, (1856-1924). US statesman; 28th president of the US (1913-21). A lawyer and academic, he became Democratic governor of New Jersey in 1911 and a year later was elected president. Re-elected in 1916, he kept the US out of World War I until the Ger-man U-boat campaign forced him to enter it in 1917.He argued for “peace without victory” and put for-ward a list of ‘Fourteen Points’, upholding democracy and self-determination, which were intended to form the basis for the peace treaty at Paris. He was also mainly responsible for the establishment of the League of Nations. His presidency ended in tragic failure when the Versailles treaty was rejected by the US Senate. Wilson suffered a stroke and retired soon afterwards.
