When were tinned foods invented?
In 1810, Nicholas Appert of France, invented a way of sterilising food in tin cans to keep for a long time. This invention relieved people from the problem of preserving food. Till that time, this was done by salting, keeping in drying or vinegar, smoking or drying, or in sugar. These methods had the limitation that the range of food which could be preserved was small. And each method changed the flavour of food. With Appert’s invention, the flavour of the food sealed in the container did not change.
At first, this method of tinned food was not popular in France, but was a great success in America.
