Why is a civil lines area called so?
When the Britishers ruled over India, they wanted to keep both the Army and themselves away from the general public, for reasons of security and to avoid fratgernisation. So most of the towns are divided into two parts—the Cantonment and the Civil Lines. The Cantonment or Can’t was a neat, clean area with bungalow for the local Army contingent while the area for civilian administrators, mostly Britishers, was called Civil Lines.
