A Report on “World Environment Day”
-By Karuna
June 5th is observed as World Environment Day since 1974. Organised by United Nations Environment Programme, the commemoration is aimed at creating awareness on the need to protect our environment. It is a time to reflect, not just on the challenges we face, but on the many initiatives, small and large, that people are involved in the world over to make sure that the world becomes a better, safer, more equitable place for mankind. Green Valley Public School, Delhi commemorated the day with a host of activities across grades, starting off with Saplings that were implanted by the students as well as by the principal and the teachers. The school Principal Ms. Sita motivated the students to plant more and more trees in order to make the surroundings green. The teachers told that it is important to look after our environment in order to make earth a better place to live. To add more colour to the day a ‘best out of waste’ activity was also held. Students used waste material to showcase their creativity.
An awareness rally was held to generate awareness beyond the school boundary in the neighbourhood. Armed with banners, flyers and badges; the green crusaders created quite an impact as they assessed public awareness on World Environment Day with a questionnaire. The responses, though encouraging, also point out to the gap in awareness and actual implementation of eco-friendly initiatives like Rain Water Harvesting, Waste Segregation at source and use of alternate energy sources. Showcasing their commitment towards a greener and cleaner world, the students successfully planted the seed of information with the hope that things will get better.
