Why are gaps left between the rail joints?

The long railway line is made up of small steel pieces called rails joined together. Small gaps are left between the rail pieces so as to provide space for the expansion of these pieces when the temperature raises in summer. If these gaps are not left, then the rails will expand and get distorted.
