Amin, Idi

Amin, Idi (1925), Ugandan army officer and politician. He was for ten years the heavyweight boxing champion of the army. In 1971 he led the military coup that seized power in President Obote’s absence and be-came president himself. In the same year he expelled about 80,000 Asians from Uganda and began a reign of terror. He promoted himself to field marshal and awarded himself the Victoria Cross. Following an invasion of Tanzanian forces and Ugandan exiles in 1979, Amin was overthrown and fled to Libya, later settling in Saudi Arabia.
