Jane Austen (1775-1817). British novelist. A shrewd ob-server of people, she only settled seriously to writing after the death of her father, a clergyman, in 1805. Sense and Sensibility (1811) at once brought her a large readership. All her novels, including Pride and Prejudice (1813) and Emma (1815), were written in the family
