Daniel Barenboim
Daniel Barenboim (1942- ). Israeli pianist and conductor. Barenboim was born in Argentina and studied in Salzburg, Paris, and Rome. He made his debut at the age of 13 and soon became well known, particularly for his performances of Beethoven’s piano sonatas. He married the cellist Jacqueline du Pre in 1967. Barenboim was musical director of the Orchestre de Paris from 1975 until 1989, when he was sacked amid much controversy. He became conductor of the Chicago Sym-phony Orchestra in 1991.
