Christiaan Barnard
Christiaan Barnard (1922). South African surgeon. After much practical research into heart surgery at the Groote Schuur Hospital in Cape Town, he performed the first human heart transplant there in 1967. Although the operation was itself a success, the patient died of pneumonia 18 days later.
