Sarah Bernhardt
Sarah Bernhardt stage name of Rosine Bernard (1844-1923), French actress. She was trained at the Paris Conservatoire and first appeared on stage in 1862 at the Comedie Francaise. By the 1880s she was an international celebrity, touring Europe, the Americas, and Australia. She was famous for a number of tragic roles, including the title roles in Hamlet and Racine’s Phedre, and was created Chevalier of the Legion of Honour in 1914. She lost her right leg in an accident (1915) but continued to perform. Her autobiography is entitled My Double Life (1907).
