Al Capone
Al Capone (1899-1947), US gangster, the son of an Italian barber. Employed at 20 to work as a strong-arm man for a Chicago gangster, he subsequently went into the illegal drink business, making a profit of two million dollars a year. Despite his life of crime, no evidence could be found to convict him until 1931, when he was sentenced to ten years’ imprisonment for evading income tax, a charge often used by the US police to convict known gangsters. Many of his enemies swore to kill him but none were successful and he died of apoplexy on his Palm Island Estate.
