Pablo Casals
Pablo Casals (1876-1973), Spanish cellist, conductor, and composer. In 1895 he became leading cellist at the Paris Opera. He played in a classical trio and as a soloist before founding and conducting the Barcelona Orchestra (1919-20). After the Spanish Civil War he settled in Prades, France, where he founded a festival of classical chamber music. He is widely regarded as the finest cellist of all time.
